A Facebook friend recently challenged me to do something a little out of my comfort zone, and I figured Fridays are a great day to showcase a little extra effort. This Friday, I attempted to draw a portrait of my mom based on an old photograph of her.
Portraits, in my opinion, are one of the hardest things to draw. I love drawing people, but to actually make a drawing look like someone you know is a whole other issue. Subtle shadows and highlights can make all the difference. I’m also not a huge fan of drawing from photographs. I prefer to walk around the subject so that I can truly understand the subtle plays in light.
I’m fairly happy with this drawing, yet I feel like the proportions are not quite right – there’s room for improvement. Good thing I still have 81 days to practice.
