Farewell 20′s – Hello Dithyrambic 30′s!

First of all, here’s the definition of dithyrambic:
–adjective

  1. of, pertaining to, or of the nature of a dithyramb.
  2. wildly irregular in form.
  3. wildly enthusiastic.

So… I guess that means I’m sort of excited about being 30? Today, I am officially a grown up. NOT!

Since it’s after midnight, that makes me 30 right about… now! I think turning 29 is scarier than turning 30 so this birthday is pretty exciting.

When you turn 29, it’s the last year in your 20′s but when you turn 30, it’s a whole new chapter. Yeah, I thought I’d be in a different place by now but on the other hand I look back in awe at all I have accomplished. (WOO ME!)

SO… why is my cake on fire?

Wikipedia says:

Birthday cakes date back as far as the Middle Ages when the English would conceal symbolic items such as gold coins, rings and thimbles inside their cakes. Each item was associated with a prediction. For example, a person finding a gold coin in a birthday cake would supposedly become wealthy; a person discovering a thimble would never marry.

Please, NO THIMBLE!!!! COINS YES!!!

Okay, but why candles? (source)

It is said that the custom of placing candles on a birthday was started by early Greeks who used to place candles on the cake that they offered to Artemis – the Goddess of Moon. Lit candles made their round shape cake glow like the moon. Germans, who perfected themselves in the art of candle-making placed candles on the cake but for religious reasons. They used to place a big candle in the centre of the cake to represent ‘light of life’. The candle is marked with lines and numbers, usually 12, which would be burned every year.

Scholars also say that the custom of placing candles originated because people believed that Gods lived in the skies. They thought that lit candle helped to send signals and prayers to the god so that they could be answered more effectively. The other belief that people held was when a person makes a wish while blowing out the votive candle a signal or message was received by the god and the prayers would be answered.

I feel wiser already and thanks to everyone for the birthday wishes!!!

see a 20 year-old would never use such a big word. they’d probably just LOL and like, ROFL, and then go flirt with some QT boyz on myspace.

Happy birthday Larissa. Life gets better and better when it is shared with those you care about. I worked too hard in my 20′s, started having fun in my 30′s, built my career in my 40′s, and enjoying the fruits of it all in my 50′s. I keep saying that it can not get better but it does.
