Happy New Year. Wicket is sick.

I started off the new year by waking up to hear Wicket whimpering in her cage. It was still dark outside. She suffered from diarrhea all day yesterday and it seems to have only gotten worse this morning – very runny with spots of blood. She vomited last night too. Poor girl.

I started calling around at 6am and the only thing open today is an emergency pet hospital. Thankfully it wasn’t too far away. I sat in the waiting room and noticed their phone was ringing off the hook because all the other vets are closed. They took her temperature (which was normal) and weighed her – then I waited a while for the doctor to come in.

I started freaking out when the vet told me her heartbeat seemed slow and they decided it was best to take her in for observation, blood work, x-rays and to put her on an IV so that she gets enough fluids. I paced around the room snuggling Wicket in a towel for 20-30 minutes before they came back to take her in. It took FOREVER. Talk about nerve wracking!

When they told me the estimate my eyes about popped out of my head. I will do anything for her but it’s going to cost and arm and a leg.

I never imagined I could love a dog so much.

I should know more later today. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

Happy New Year – ba humbug. What a crappy way to start off the new year.

UPDATE: So I get to pick her up in the AM and then take her to my vet. They said she is doing well and resting. Not sure what the cause was but they said her intestines were irritated and they had been giving her medicine to stop the diarrhea. It can be dangerous in yorkies I guess because they are so small. She only weighs a little under 5 pounds.

Thanks everyone for your notes! I can’t wait to bring her home again.

I also have a small doggy at home and I know what it means to be so worried about your own pet. I care about her so much, that I am prepared to do anything for her own good. And I’ve also never imagined that my dog could significate so much too me :P .
I really hope that everything turned to normal and that Wicket is full of health again :)

HI ya Larissa. Hapy New Year to you too! So sorry to hear about Wicket, I hope she’s feeling better. Any idea what could’ve been the cause for her intestines getting irritated.

Finch: I think she’s a yorkshire Terrier. Looks a lot like an Australian Silky Terrier.

I am happy to hear that Wicket is doing better. I, too spent New Year’s weekend at the vet’s. My cat had to also get X rays and IV fluids. She’s doing better, but not 100%. It’s nice to realize that I was not the only one who spent New Year’s worried about their pet!

We had a “Lab” named Reeses (he was peanut butter and chocolate colored”. He displayed similar initial symptoms to what you described. The Vet finally determined that he had chewed up and swallowed an athletic tube sock. His area was in the house laundry. He was sick at both ends and his big eyes were “so sad”. Sadly, he couldn’t completely process the rubberized tube sock and it did alot of damage to his large intestine. The operation would have costed $3,000. back in 1998 and the Vet said his quality of life (if he survived) would have been questionable. We put him to sleep and our family mourned as though we had lost one of our own children. I’m happy to hear that Wicket is doing better.
We have to be as careful and diligent with our pets as we are with our children. Remember, you’re Wickets MOM! You appear to have developed some admirable parenting skills. Wishing you all a happy and “healthy” New Year!

Oh Poor Wicket!!! I hope she is her usual Jumping Bean self soon. If you are ever in the need for a great pet hospital Hollywood Animal Hospital is fantastic. http://www.hollywoodanimal.com/ Website blows…. My family has been taking our cats there for over 20 years.

Happy New Year and hang in there. Give the Little Jumping Bean a hug and kiss from me

Awww – poor Wicket. So she be coming round this week?

It could be stressed induced, my sister and her fiance’s dog had the same thing after he was brought home. Though i can’t remember what the exact cause was.

Could be a few things, Hookworm, tear in the intestine, viral infection or anal sack infection.

If you feel he may be sick you can add Garlic powder to his food. Garlic is an anti-microbial and will help clear the system of bacteria and infection. Don’t be afraid to sprinkle it with a heavy hand, dogs love Garlic and he should eat it up right away. The only draw back to adding Garlic in the food is flatulence, it may be a little stinky but the Garlic is doing its job.

Hi Larissa, Wicket is so cute. I love the videos you’ve posted. Hope she’s OK. Our dog had a $350 tummy ache once. My loving spouse rushed our dog to the vet and had one of those overnight observations because she was throwing up a lot and the next day they said she was fine, come and pick her up. You know they love to see us pet owners coming $$$$$$. Sometimes you have to just realize they will get over it like we do.

    Have a great New Year!

Last year Chili-Pepper put us through something similar but the vet did a great job and now she is a very healthy Scotty. I wish Wicket the very best. Please keep us informed.
