It’s my privilege to write about Miss USA because I once stood in that very place about 4 years ago. I wanted to answer the most frequently asked questions when it comes to pageants, my personal experience and then what I think about Miss USA 2005.
Most people have a tendency to be pretty critical of these girls pr just outright mean. “I don’t like Miss so and so’s dress” or “she’s a bit fat”. I’ve been guilty of it too. I think we need to realize how hard these girls worked to get where they are and who are we to say anything?
On the other hand, they put themselves in that position. Which is where conflict comes in.
Why we are so quick to judge others? Especially when these girls are brave enough to put themselves exactly in that position. Every girl that had the courage to stand on that stage is beautifully strong. These girls have a ton of courage and are trying at something that opens doors.
While I won’t deny some girls do loose their identity in the process, it is a great life experience for most and most of these girls are there because of a dream. In the end there’s only one crown and a lot of broken dreams but sometimes those broken pieces are more beautiful in a creative mosaic composition than in the original package that we often view as winning. The way a girl views the outcome is up to her.
Everyone wants to know what is the difference between Miss USA and Miss America?
The History
Miss America started it all. Atlantic City wanted keep tourist in town for an extra week at the end of the summer season with a “Bathing Beauty” contest – and it worked! Over 80 years later Miss America is one of the biggest scholarship organizations for young women ever created. Miss USA was founded about 30 years after Miss America.
Miss USA is owned by the Miss Universe organization. Miss USA was stared about fifty years ago by people who left the Miss America Organization due to conflicts. Today, Miss USA goes on to compete in Miss Universe where Miss America does not. Miss Teen USA is part of the Miss Universe Organization. Mr. Donald Trump purchased a part of Miss Universe in 1997.
Pageant Scoring
Miss America is based on 40% talent, 20% interview, 20% evening gown and 20% swimsuit. Miss USA doesn’t have a talent competition where scoring is broken into thirds. 33% interview, 33% evening gown and 33% swimsuit.
My Experience
The opening number doesn’t matter. When you are 1 of 51 girl it can seem difficult to stand out and you certainly don’t want to end up in back. At Miss Teen USA I stressed myself out because I couldn’t dance and I was left out in the back yet. I never placed at Miss Teen USA. Yet at Miss USA I volunteered to be in back and was fourth runner up. I found it much more worthwhile to put a smile on my face and laugh at what I couldn’t do and to focus on what I could do. Common sense maybe but at the time competition makes a girl strive to stand out.
Not all girls a catty. Actually, I made some great friends. I’ve never seen any girls be rude or impolite. If anything, the girls are under a lot of stress and tension but we were all in it together. It was actually more like being on spring break. Rehearsals are tough yet fun and that’s where you spend most of your time while at the pageant.
Swimsuit is the most important part of the competition. If you feel great in your bathing suit, you’ll feel great in your dress. Being physically fit makes you mentally fit. Don’t go with any regrets.
Be ready for the unexpected. There’s always going to be surprises in the finals – you might end up there yourself. Or you might get a question you don’t understand. It’s not so much what you say, but how you say it.
On MISS USA 2005
There weren’t any girls that stood out because they were all so outstanding this year. Some years you can just tell who’s going win right off the bat but this year was tough. But there is a nice little prize package! I wonder what to do with a huge chandelier?
Overall I was pleased with the format and happy with the winner. Styles from the 80’s were back with big hair and some very pageanty dresses (which is what we love to see). In 2001 we were told to look more simple, not too much beading, not as pageanty. But the truth is, I think that’s what we love about pageants.
